In honor of Roger Clemens
Ok, I believe Roger and if he is lying I will be disappointed like the world was with Marion Jones and he should suffer the same fate as she if caught lying.
I wrote a piece way back in September 2007, (More Steroids Please, 9/19/2007) and it speculated the impact less debt would have on the US economy. The concept was that excess credit created false demand: Eliminate the credit, eliminate the demand. If you eliminate demand and total consumption declines the economy will contract. Simple algebra, a=b and b=c then a=c.
There are many variables impacting the economy all the time and it is difficult to isolate the impact one has. It would be a lot easier if you knew how much weight each variable had on the economy but that to is difficult to measure and is a moving target as fickle as the US consumer.
I think the debt contraction is having far greater impact on the US Economy than what I earlier predicted and my fear is that it will last longer than previously stated.
Debt made our economy bigger, stronger and completely make believe, much like sports is today.
One last thought, as I am inflicted with the news coverage of the Congressional hearing: OMG, I cannot believe that Congress and the news media has put steroid use in pro baseball as the highest priority in the Nation. Never mind the boys in Iraq, the economy (we throw some pocket change at it), the state of education or erosion of individual freedoms. Wake up America, we have problems and it does not concern professional baseball players.
